World Book Day – Thursday 2nd March 2017

We’re looking forward to World Book Day on Thursday 2nd March, and are inviting children to come to school dressed as a character from their favourite book. It would also be nice for them to share their favourite books and stories with their class, so if they would like, they can bring a copy of their favourite book into school with them.

We will be doing lots of reading on the day and discussing our favourite stories. We will also be taking part in role-play and other fun actiuvities around stories. Don’t forget to look on our class blogs to see all the fun things we have done!

I can’t wait to see which characters come to school on Thursday 2nd March!

Mrs Pearson, Reading Co-ordinator

P.S. If you’d like a few ideas, check out the list below!

Stuck for ideas? Why not think about:

* one of David Walliams’ characters, like The Boy In The Dress, or Gangsta Granny?
* someone from Roald Dahl’s magical books, such as Matilda, The BFG, or one of The Twits?
* a classic fairy tale character like Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood (or the Wolf!), the Little Mermaid, or the Snow Queen?
* Dennis the Menace or Where’s Wally could be a good choice if you have a stripey jumper on hand?
* any of the crazy characters from Dr Suess’s books – could you be the Lorax? Or perhaps Thing 1 and Thing 2 with your sibling or best friend?
* Tintin, Peter Pan and Angelina Ballerina could be fairly easy to put together from clothes already in your wardrobe!
* what if Lowerplace is really Hogwarts? It would be amazing to see Harry, Ron, Hermione and Hagrid – or maybe even Dolores Umbridge – around school.

Don’t forget, the staff will be taking part too – I wonder who we will all be? And will anyone actually be silly enough to be Captain Underpants?

World Book Day – 3rd March 2016

World Book Day 2016

This year to celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 3rd March 2016 we are celebrating the tradition of the bedtime story. We are asking children to come to school dressed in their pyjamas or onesie and bring along their favourite bedtime story or the favourite bedtime story that you enjoyed reading as a child.

As part of our celebration of World Book Day we are also challenging your child again to have a picture taken of them reading somewhere extreme. This can be up a tree, on top of a mountain or standing on their head, but obviously we encourage you to keep safe (I wouldn’t recommend reading whist wrestling a tiger!) but we are really looking forward to seeing who in school has such a passion for reading that they have to do it anywhere and everywhere!

Entries need to be in handed in to your child’s class teacher or can be emailed to the office (office@lowerplace.rochdale.sch.uk) by the 2nd March 2016.

Thank you,

Mrs Davis (Reading Leader)

World Book Day – A dress-up success!

World Book Day 2013 on PhotoPeach

It was fantastic to see everyone dressed up as their favourite book characters yesterday. Everyone went to such an effort to join in. We had a few Pirate Pete’s and Wizard of Oz characters among the staff too, which was brilliant.

One child from each class was also chosen as the “best dressed”, and were awarded a £5 WH Smiths Vouchers to spend on the books of their choice.

Thank you, everyone, for making it such a memorable day!

This year to celebrate World Book Day on Thursday 7th March 2013 each year group has be assigned a literacy genre, in which children can come to school dressed as a character from a book from that particular genre.
The genres are;

Reception & Year 1 – Fairytales

Along with a letter which will be sent home with children tonight, each child will also receive a National book token to be redeemed against one of eight books. When they receive their token, all they need to do is to take it to a local bookshop and swap it for one of eight (exclusive, new and completely free) £1 World Book Day Books or use it as a £1 off coupon on any full price book.

We can’t wait to see what outfits you all come up with!
